Gaffer Gamgee believes that the relationship between master and servant is part of the natural order of things. Sam’s father, the Gaffer, worried greatly about where learning to read and write would take his son but of one thing he would have approved and that is that Sam stays faithfully by his master through thick and thin. Later in the journey he will say this to Sam: “Frodo wouldn’t have got far without Sam.” And he is right. Frodo himself agrees with this assessment. Many argue that Sam is the true hero of the Quest of the Ring and that Frodo could never have reached Mount Doom without him. Next week we will think about how Frodo carries Sam to Mordor but this week we will begin by thinking of how Sam carries Frodo. The gift of lembas that will sustain them on many weary marches is given because the lady of the wood did not hide from the travellers but opened her home and heart to them.įrodo and Sam could not take a step towards Mordor and the accomplishment of their task without this communion and in the weeks ahead we will be reminded of many that they cannot see as they stumble the weary miles that lie now before them. The elven rope by which they descend to the lowlands and which returns to them when Sam calls it is the fruit of long years of craftsmanship placed at their service at a moment of need. They are in communion with so many others living and departed and without that communion they would not be able take a step further upon their journey. They cannot even descend from its heights into the marshlands below that lie between them and the northern walls of Mordor. As we begin this journey Frodo and Sam are hopelessly alone in the Emyn Muil. They need to be carried there and in the postings on this blog over the next few weeks we will see who carries them and how. It is even too great for them to achieve together. The task of getting there is too great for either of them to achieve alone. So, that’s all for my semi-request Lord of the Rings sketch! I have no clue what’s next, but the weekend is here, so I’m sure something will come up.Frodo and Sam are carried to Mordor. Here’s the only progression image I have, which was just after laying down some shadows, but prior to any blending: I think this is mostly because I moved sort of quickly on this one. Here’s the unedited one:Īlso, this time I only remembered to take one progression photo. (Update: I cleaned up the photo with a reshoot, but unfortunately I’m a bit too lazy to go back and add the speech bubbles). Clearly, it loses some “umph” without some commentary on Frodo’s laziness. My Gollum doesn’t look much like the Andy Serkis CJI Smeagol from the actual movie, but I’m actually okay with that I think it’s still obvious who that’s supposed to be.Īlthough the Gollum speech bubble version is top billing in this post, I also wanted to include the original drawing without the comic relief. The angle didn’t really leave much room to show Frodo’s face, so we can just assume that he does look like Elijah Wood. I think it does actually look like him for the most part. At first, I thought I wasn’t going to be able to capture Sean Astin’s Samwise accurately. I’m going to post this ridiculousness to Instagram as the “ fulfilled request.”įor what started as a joke drawing, this one really did work out well.

I added good ol’ Gollum/Smeagol peeking out from behind a rock, and reserved some space for a digitally-added speech bubble for whatever lame joke I wanted to add. I modified the caption plan as the sketch proceeded, because I liked how it was turning out and didn’t want to mess it up with a speech bubble. I even planned to draw in a caption about Frodo being a slacker. In fact, as I was drawing this scene, I approached it at first mostly as a joke.

Once I realized this wasn’t a real request, it definitely loosened me up a bit. And so that’s exactly what I decided to draw! I responded by saying that I would do a sketch featuring the true hero of Lord of the Rings, Samwise, carrying that lazy hobbit Frodo up a volcano.

In the comments of an Instagram post I made on my last sketch (Fezzik and Inigo from the Princess Bride), one of my longtime friends responded with “ Sam and Frodo.” This comment was pretty exciting, because I thought it was a request for another sketch! As it turns out, he was joking (which should have been obvious in hindsight), but I already had in my mind to move forward with it.
